Oral Health Promotion


Northland DHB Oral Health Service promotes good oral health by offering advice and support from Te Hapua in the Far North, to Kaiwaka in the south.

Free oral health care

We provide free oral health care to all children/adolescents from birth until their 18th birthday.

 

Preschool Children

We encourage enrolling your children with the oral health service from birth.

Preschool children (0-5-years-of age) can be enrolled with the nearest oral health clinic or mobile in your area.

  • A dental therapist will check your child’s teeth 
  • X-rays may be taken to help detect any oral health problems
  • Oral health advice and treatment will be provided according to your child’s oral health needs.

 

Primary School Children

We encourage parents and/or caregivers to be present with the child during their oral health visits.

  • A dental therapist will check your child’s teeth
  • X-rays may be takento help detect any oral health problems
  • Oral health advice and treatment will be provided according to your child’s oral health needs.

 

Intermediate School

We encourage parents and/or caregivers to be present with the child during their oral health visits.

  • A dental therapist will check your child’s teeth
  • X-rays may be taken to help detect any oral health problems
  • Oral health advice and treatment will be provided according to your child’s oral health needs.

When your child leaves Intermediate School, please enrol with an Adolescent Oral Health Service Provider. This could be either Northland District Health Board Oral Health Service or a contracted private dentist. High School (Year 9-18th birthday)

To continue with FREE oral health care, you will need to enrol your child with Northland District Health Board Oral Health Service or a contracted private dentist. We can provide you a full list of options, please contact us on 0800 MY TEETH (0800 698 3384)

  • All oral health treatment will continue to be free with the exception of some cosmetic treatment and teeth straightening
  • A dental therapist or dentist will check your adolescent’s teeth
  • X-rays may be taken to help detect any oral health problems
  • Oral health advice and treatment will be provided according to your adolescent’s oral health needs.

 

Emergency Pain Relief Treatment - Community Card Holders

Pain relief treatment is provided for Community Card Holders at a cost of $40.

 

Oral Health Emergency (Outside Business Hours)

For serious urgent oral health emergencies, outside business hours, go to the  Emergency Department at Whangarei or Kaitaia hospital.

 

Tips for a healthy smile

  • Brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Choose healthy snacks
  • Water is the best drink
  • Lift the Lip every month and check your child’s teeth and gums

 

Oral Health Promotion

Northland DHB Oral Health Promotion Advisor promotes oral health by offering advice and support for:

  • Community groups including Māori  and Pacific Island Groups
  • Iwi Health Providers
  • Antenatal Groups
  • Young Mothers
  • Preschool Groups
  • All  health providers
