The Smokefree team works across the Northland region to implement, encourage and support initiatives that aim to reduce smoking prevalence, the harms caused by smoking and increase Smokefree environments.
The team works in areas relating to smokefree environments, policy and promotion with communities, workplaces, the education sector, tobacco retailers, and licensed premises, and the provision of Smokefree information. The team also facilitates Patu Pūauahi, the regions forum of organisations and workforce involved in tobacco control.
Community development, focusing on initiatives that promote smokefree lifestyles, and working to support more Māori smokers to quit, is also a component of the teams work.
Pregnancy The team facilitates the Hapunga Auahi Kore Alliances of Te Taitokerau. The Alliances comprise of service providers working with pregnant women and supports collaboration and innovation to help pregnant women quit smoking.
The team also provides a smoking cessation service in Kaikohe , as well as Northland health staff training and work to enhance the Northland District health Boards Smokefree policy.
The team looks forward to supporting and being a part of the national vision of an Auahi Kore Aotearoa by 2025.
