Coronary Care Unit - Whangarei Hospital

The cardiac service consists of a six bed Coronary Care Unit; step down cardiac patients on medical ward, a Cardiac Rehab Service, Medical Outreach Team, and an overview of provision of care for cardiac patients throughout the region.

The Coronary Care Unit provides care to critically ill cardiac patients. Approximately 700 admissions per year. Patients are also transferred from the regional hospitals to this unit as required. The Coronary Care Unit provides medical cardiology care only; patients requiring invasive therapy and angiography are transferred to Auckland Hospital. The CCU also utilises a flexible monitoring system to monitor patients outside of the actual CCU. There is ability to monitor up to six additional patients on the medical wing in Whangarei Hospital with an added ability to remotely monitor patients in the regional hospitals. Northland DHB is the first in the country to utilise this technology. In addition the CCU also manages a number of high acuity medical patients.

Cardiac diagnostics testing available includes ETT, Echocardiography, holter monitoring, and Dobutamine stress testing. These services are managed from the outpatient department.

The Cardiac Rehab team provides cardiac rehabilitation to cardiac patients in the Whangarei, Kaipara, and Mid north regions. Patients’ post-cardiac event are seen in Whangarei as inpatients. Some patients are seen on home visits on a very limited basis. Formal rehab classes (stage II) are provided in each area. Whangarei classes are held on a weekly basis, the regional areas have classes on a bimonthly basis. Available to inpatients and outpatients, the team makes follow-ups, as resources are available.

The Medical Outreach team provides care to patients with chronic respiratory and heart failure problems. The team case manages patients to assist in maintaining an optimum level of wellness and to reduce the need for admission to hospital. This team also manages an outpatient DVT program. These specialist nurses work in the community and case manage a patient load of 25 –30 patients each. They work in collaboration with specialist physicians and the patients’ GP.

A specialist cardiologist from Auckland provides visiting clinics
