Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) Doctors Were Welcomed to Te Tai Tokerau Today

A group of postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) doctors were welcomed to Te Tai Tokerau today, Monday 6 January.

This is the fourth year the event has been hosted by Dr Chayce Glass, with support from the Resident Medical Officers Unit, and held at Dr Glass’s whānau marae, Whakapara, just north of Whangārei.

Dr Glass says that graduating new doctors from the Universities of Otago and Auckland are formally welcomed to Te Tai Tokerau to ensure they feel supported throughout their transition to mahi at Health New Zealand |Te Whatua Ora Te Tai Tokerau.

“A hui whakatau is our welcoming ceremony and provides us with an opportunity to welcome our new cohort of house officers in a community-based setting, to emphasise the importance of Te Ao Māori in Te Tai Tokerau," he said.

Senior Medical Officer Lineka Brenninkmeijer spoke during the whakatau offering her support to the students.

“I have always felt loved and privileged to be a doctor here in Te Tai Tokerau, and I am looking forward to supporting your journey with us.”

Following the initial pōwhiri, attended by whānau and invited guests, there were several learning sessions held.

The first was on whakawhanaungatanga – relationship building based upon Tikanga Māori.

Then there was an introduction to the Hui Process and the Meihana Model, currently used in the teaching of Hauora Māori at the University of Otago and which aims to improve clinical interaction with Māori patients.

Graduates of Aotearoa New Zealand accredited medical schools and doctors who have sat and passed an approved medical registration examination, including the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX Clinical) complete prevocational medical training.

The prevocational medical training programme ensures that postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) doctors (collectively known as interns) continue to build on their undergraduate education.
