The Gift of Warmth This Winter

Samantha Perkinson, Business Manager of Surgical and Support Services at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora in Te Tai Tokerau recently completed beanie number 50 to help patients stay warm through the cold months.

Before Sam's father-in-law passed away from cancer two years ago, he was a patient at The Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre.

Sam had gifted her loved one a nice hot water bottle and a warm oodie at the time, but says she never finished making him the beanie.

This memory is what motivates Sam to continue crocheting for others, in honour of her late family member.

“I thought it would be a nice thing to do to help other patients and a nice thing to do to remember my father-in-law while I am making them,” Sam says.

Jacquelene Boucher, Clinical Nurse Educator shares, "One of our patients Josephine was delighted to choose from some new beanies today as she had recently shrunk her woollen one in the hot wash.

“Thankfully, Sam had been busy crocheting a colourful assortment of handmade beanies and delivered them to the team. Some of our patients lose their hair during chemotherapy and having warm alternative head wear can be a great pick me up."

Crochet is also a great stress reliever, Sam points out.

She hopes to continue making more for next winter.
