8 November 2024 - Wastewater leak at Coopers Beach - No Swimming Until Warning Signs Have Been Removed

Far North District Council has identified a wastewater leak at Coopers Beach. To stay safe:

- Beachgoers are warned not to swim around Coopers Beach until warning signs are removed.

- Make sure to keep children and pets away from the water too.

- Don’t collect shellfish from the area for at least 28 days from when the leak is contained.

Sewage contains pathogens that can be harmful to both people and animals, and these can also build-up in shellfish.

Contact with wastewater can lead to eye, ear, nose, and skin infections.

If contaminated water is swallowed it can cause gastroenteritis, leading to nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Most people can recover from gastroenteritis without having to seek medical treatment, but if you need health advice call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or contact your GP.
