We have recently been notified of a small number of diarrhoea and vomiting illnesses associated with the consumption of raw oysters. This is being investigated by the Ministry of Primary Industries and a local recall on a batch of oysters has been issued as a precaution. MPI Media Release Link.(external link)
Foodborne illnesses from raw shellfish remain common throughout New Zealand and we continue to advise that oysters and other shellfish are always well cooked before consumption to minimise the risks of falling sick. If you or anyone you know has recently consumed oysters or any other shellfish and become ill, they should notify our Public Health Unit by calling the on-call Health Protection Officer via the hospital switchboard on 09 4304100.
