Operating Theatres | Te Whatu Ora - Te Tai Tokerau

Operating Theatres

The perioperative service includes the Operating theatres, the Surgical Admission Unit (SAU), Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and Central Sterilising Unit (CSU).  Our staff includes Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Anaesthetic Technicians (both registered and trainees), Health Care Assistants, Sterilising Technicians and trainees, and clerical staff.

There are eight operating theatres plus a procedure room at Whangārei Hospital.

The surgical specialties provided include:

  • General Surgery
  • Endoscopy
  • Orthopaedics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Ear, Nose and Throat surgery (ENT)
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Plastics
  • Dental
  • Acutes/Trauma

Anaesthetic and Intensive care departments provide support for these specialties, along with the day surgery and inpatient facilities.

Whangārei does not have specialist services for complex vascular surgery, cardiac or neurosurgery. The patients requiring these services are assigned to Auckland Hospital operating lists.

Paediatric and Oral surgeons visit at times throughout the year. This minimises travel for some patients and provided support to Northland surgical practitioners.

Some of our staff assist on the Mobile Surgical Services Bus as it travels around Northland on a regular basis.

Surgical services strive to provide quality care, working alongside other providers who interface with and impact on these services.
